group support FAQs

What does group support involve?

Our group sessions are relaxed. There is a general structure for each session, but what we talk about is guided by the group. Sessions are skills focused and might focus on living with feelings of grief or other complicated emotions in the here and now.

There will be general points for discussion in the group, but nobody is expected to contribute if they feel more comfortable just listening. We ask that everyone keep discussions confidential within the group, so that everyone can feel safe to share openly.

Will I have an assessment?

We will carry out an assessment with you so that we have a good understanding of your feelings and what you are hoping to gain from accessing support. In your assessment, we will ask some questions about your bereavement and how this has affected you.

You will usually go on to access groups after you have accessed individual sessions – you will have one assessment at the start of your individual sessions, and you wouldn’t need a second assessment to come along to a group.

How many group sessions can I access?

You can access support from our peer support groups as often or as little as you feel you need. If you are accessing the groups often, we may work with you to identify additional support that might help you to safely manage the way you are feeling.
